Spectre

Despite being a box office draw for 50 years, James Bond’s last outing Skyfall shattered all expectations, making over $1 billion worldwide. That set expectations exceedingly high for the next Bond adventure — Spectre. The movie brings back the classic cadre of Bond baddies, as well as the star and director of Skyfall. The Hunger Games – A Podcast Preview

The Hunger Games novels topped the New York Times best seller lists and went on to become Amazon’s all-time top selling book series (outselling even Harry Potter). Jennifer Lawrence was an acclaimed Oscar-nominated actress gaining mainstream attention after her role in X-Men: First Class. When those two came together, with Lawrence playing lead character Katniss in the Hunger Games movie series, the result was a worldwide phenomenon. The first three films alone grossed over $2 billion worldwide. Now the fourth and final Hunger Games film is set to be released, and leading up to Mockingjay Part 2 Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob are watching and reviewing all the Hunger Games movies. Did the original movie The Hunger Games do the book justice? And how is it not just a young adult series? Donate to Now Playing to help keep the podcast going into next year, and you can listen and find out!

Brock returns to co-host Now Playing Podcast ‘SPECTRE’ show

At the end of every 007 adventure the same line appears in the credits: “James Bond Will Return.”

He’s not the only one back for 2015’s SPECTRE. When Now Playing Podcast listeners start streaming the latest review in the show’s James Bond Retrospective Series, they’ll hear a familiar voice.

Brock. James Brock.

Although he’s the voice of Now Playing Podcast’s opening narration and closing credits, listeners haven’t heard longtime co-host Brock review a series since the 2013 Riddick retrospective. Brock, who sat on the panel for Now Playing’s first retrospective in 2009, talked about his return to the show as a co-host and what’s next after Bond.

Q: How much have you missed being a regular co-host? Are there any recent series’ you wish you could have been a part of?

Brock: “I do miss it, and some days more than others — especially the recording sessions, the interaction with my fellow panelists. You all got a taste of what it is like to record the episodes on the live [Kingsman] show and with each episode’s outtakes. We can have a great deal of fun recording these shows. There are times when it hits me unexpectedly, like when — and I am sure we all do it, co-hosts and listeners alike — you listen to the show and you find you are talking back to the podcast in response to something a host said. So in that warped way I am on every panel! Truth be told, I feel blessed to be part of this amazing show and am looking forward to my return to the panel.”

Q: You’re back for Bond, what about that series are you most looking forward to?

Brock: “Are you kidding? SPECTRE is back in the fold, which likely means Blofeld! Us Bond fans have been looking forward to SPECTRE and Blofeld’s return since Diamonds Are Forever. In the For Your Eyes Only pre-credits scene they strongly hint that is Blofeld of course, but they never actually call him that by name. I am also hoping they connect SPECTRE to the mysterious Quantum organization in Quantum of Solace, which is also the one Le Chiffre was working for in Casino Royale. They completely skipped over that in Skyfall, so here’s hoping we get some answers and connections. We will see soon enough.

“On paper, they made some good decisions with casting Christoph Waltz, David Bautista and Monica Bellucci, and bringing back director Sam Mendes. But it always comes down to a good script. Skyfall is the most successful Bond movie to date, so the audience expectations are at an all-time high for the series. I have hope SPECTRE will keep the Bond resurgence going strong.”

Q: Have you been practicing saying “Brock, James Brock” in the mirror?

Brock: “In the mirror, no. In the car or in the shower, absolutely. This is a podcast, after all; it’s all about how it sounds, not how it looks.”

Q: You’re also coming back for Creed, are you excited for the film? What were your thoughts when you heard there would be a spinoff to Rocky?

Brock: “I think the idea is solid, a logical progression to continue the series while allowing itself enough space within that concept to become its own thing. I much prefer this idea than yet another unwanted, unneeded remake of a classic or a gimmicky reboot. I like that Creed is focused on a new character that younger audiences will want to watch, that they can get behind and root for; and simultaneously the fans of the original series can have an instant connection with because we are familiar with the character’s father. Ideally, Creed is a strong enough movie to potentially start a whole new series of successful spin-off films.”

Q: Is this something we can come to expect in the future? Will Brock be back for the next Halloween film, the next Friday the 13th, or even a Jaws sequel??

Brock: “That is the plan, yes. I look forward to coming back to the panel as much as opportunity and my schedule will allow.”

Q: 2016 will be the ninth year of Now Playing, which means the 10th anniversary is coming fast. Did you ever see the show lasting this long, and why do you think it’s been so successful?

Brock: “Truly unbelievable, isn’t it? After that first retrospective series I knew we were on to something. The potential of this show is limitless. The only thing I ever thought would make the show stop would be the inevitable running out of movie series to review! But thankfully, with Hollywood as sequel happy as ever, and obsessed with rebooting every dormant brand name series they can find, Now Playing should be able to go on for quite a long time to come.

“I think there are three big reasons why the show is so successful. First, it is the format: we do retrospective series’ where we devote a full podcast episode to each entry in a movie series — including the sequels or TV movies — that don’t always get, or frankly deserve, that sort of scrutiny or attention. The second reason is the panel. We all get along and feed off each other nicely, you can’t fake good chemistry. But on top of that, we all come prepared. That is a big part of Now Playing, that we put the time in for each and every series, and as a result we have informed, and often hilarious, conversations about all sorts of genres of movies, no matter what grouping of hosts are on the panel for a particular series. And lastly, the show is successful because the hosts and the audience take the ride through each movie series together. We hear feedback from our fans on social media and the forums about their opinions, their ideas, which hosts they think will give the green or red arrow on the next episode and so much more. We love that we have such involved and knowledgeable fans that join us each and every week at Now Playing.”

Now Playing’s James Bond Retrospective Series continues Nov. 10 with the review of SPECTRE.

It Follows

It’s a long-standing horror movie trope: teens who have sex are murdered. Friday the 13th, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and dozens more films followed this pattern…but no film has made it as literal as It Follows. “It” is a supernatural creature that is passed through sex. When “It” is after you, your only escape is to pass it on by having sex with someone else.

Yet It Follows is not a morality tale; the director takes this concept to new and frightening places.

So should you watch It? Join Stuart, Jakob, and Arnie to find out!

From Dusk Till Dawn – A Podcast Skit & Preview

Quentin Tarantino is an obvious go-to for Mexican standoffs, but perhaps not so much for Mexican vampires! Yet that was the topic of one of the filmmaker’s early scripts that he revised and made with his pal Robert Rodriguez. Tarantino focused on his acting in his largest role to date, and Rodriguez handled the directing. With TV star George Clooney and Tarantino staple Harvey Keitel along for the ride, this crime-horror comedy found a cult following during its 1996 release. But do these vampires such? Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

Artisan Entertainment and Haxan Films wasted no time releasing a sequel to The Blair Witch Project. Intending to capitalize on the first film’s huge success they rushed Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 for release while the original film was still part of the cultural zeitgeist. The sequel goes meta as we watch a group of fans of the original film take a pilgrimage to some of its filming sites when strange things begin to happen and some of the team go missing. Despite being directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger Blair Witch 2 never escaped the original’s shadow and has been mostly forgotten. Does Book of Shadows conjure up scares to match the original? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Pulp Fiction – A Podcast Skit and Preview

Reservoir Dogs made Quentin Tarantino a press darling and an indie film star, but the question remained if he was a one hit wonder. That question would be answered in 1994 with his second film Pulp Fiction. The movie resurrected the career of John Travolta, while catapulting his co-stars to A-list status. It won Tarantino (and his co-writer) an Academy Award. To many, this is still considered his best film. But is it? The Blair Witch Project

In 1999 two great fears gripped the American people — Y2K and The Blair Witch Project. This little movie was made for only $20,000 but it became a Sundance darling. Released by Artisan it went on to become the most profitable movie of all time, shot its stars and makers to superstardom, and opened the door for more “found footage” horror films. But without the hype of the moment does the Blair Witch still have what it takes to scare you? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Natural Born Killers – A Podcast Skit & Preview

In 1994 Quentin Tarantino’s name was dominating cinema. Reservoir Dogs had found a huge audience on video. Pulp Fiction won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and movie buffs anxiously awaited for its October wide release. Through self-promotion and film-making, Tarantino was a media darling. But beating Pulp Fiction to theaters was Natural Born Killers – Oliver Stone’s thesis on the media based on one of Tarantino’s early scripts. And in 1994 fans had to decide which Tarantino film was their favorite. Natural Born Killers’ legacy is more controversial, with many real-life killers citing the film as their inspiration. How does the film hold up over 20 years later? Does its commentary on the media hold up then or now? Listen to the preview, then donate to Now Playing Podcast to find out!

The Ewok Adventure (Caravan of Courage)

George Lucas didn’t want to do any more Star Wars movies after Return of the Jedi, but he wasn’t done in that universe. Inspired by kids’ affection for the furry Ewoks Lucas ordered the creation of an Ewok TV Special, which grew into The Ewok Adventure – a two-hour ABC Movie of the Week. Does Star Wars work on the small budget of the small screen? And when did Wicket learn to talk? Join our hosts for this review and find out!

Return of the Jedi

George Lucas concluded the Star Wars trilogy in 1983 with Return of the Jedi — a film thought for many years to be the final Star Wars movie ever. Eight bad guys go from breakfast to a bloodbath in Reservoir Dogs. The film set the tone for crime movies in the 1990s and beyond. It also put the spotlight on indie cinema for that decade, opening doors for Robert Rodriguez, Kevin Smith, and other Miramax darlings. Most importantly, though, it introduced the world to writer/director Quentin Tarantino. Transporter 3

In 2008 Jason Statham came back for one last ride in Transporter 3. This time Frank has to drive the daughter of a Ukranian politician to Odessa, avoiding danger and romantic entanglements along the way. The film ended Statham’s run as the Transporter, but launched the American career of aptly-named director Olivier Megaton. Did the trilogy end on a high note? Listen to find out!

Fantastic Four (2015)

It’s been 20 years since Roger Corman first made (but never released) the world’s first Fantastic Four film, and now we get our fourth. Gone is the humor of the Tim Story duology; instead, Chronicle director Josh Trank created a grim and gritty version of Marvel’s First Family, more based on the Ultimate Comics version than any other. But behind the scenes squabbles and internet gossip led to this movie’s record low audience and critic ratings. Can this film be, if not Fantastic, any good at all? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Hasbro’s Star Wars Fans’ Choice Poll — Round 2 Starts Now

HasbroQ&A

Star Wars Action News’ participation in Hasbro’s 2015 Fans’ Choice action figure poll nears completion!

As announced Monday, Hasbro has started a new poll where Star Wars fans and collectors pick which figure is made for the company’s new 6-inch Black Series line of Star Wars figures.

Star Wars Action News was invited to poll their fans on which characters they wanted.  Round 1 was a completely open nomination form, and over 70 different figures were nominated.  Of all the figures requested, the single figure with the most nominations was Ackmena, the singing cantina owner from the notorious Star Wars Holiday Special.  In a close second place was Brea Tonnika — a background character in the cantina from first Star Wars film.

The top 30 nominees have been taken into Round 2 of voting!  Here each Star Wars fan chooses the one figure they want most in 6-inch plastic form.  This second round of voting ends Monday, June 29th, and then the five characters with the most votes will be submitted to Hasbro.

The first 20 characters were picked from the first round of nominations:

Ackmena
Brea Tonnika
Obi-Wan Kenobi (A New Hope)
Admiral Ackbar
ARC Trooper Commander Colt
Gamorrean Guard
Asajj Ventress (Dark Diciple)
Lumpy
Lando Calrissian (Jabba’s Skiff Guard)
Momaw Nadon
Grand Moff Tarkin (A New Hope)
Darth Maul (Robot Legs)
Han Solo (Bespin Outfit)
General Grievous (4-arms)
Ponda Baba
Mara Jade
Sabine
Ephant Mon
Republic Commando
Blue Snaggletooth

The other 51 characters nominated received only 1 vote each, so the Star Wars Action News team, including podcast hosts Arnie and Marjorie Carvalho, reporters Brock, Johnathan Brenner, Justin Kozisek and Steve “The Ginger Prince” Nixon, video editor Andrew Harrison, and photo editors Jay Fazio and Curtis Stevenson.  From the 51 chosen characters the panel selected 10 figures:

Darth Talon
Darth Nihilus
Dexter Jettster
Jaxxon
Watto
Admiral Piett
Lobot
Yak Face
Grand Admiral Thrawn
Amanaman

Which of these 30 characters is your top pick as a new Black Series 6-inch figure?  Vote now in the Star Wars Action News forums!

Mission: Impossible

Mission: Impossible was a smash hit TV series in the 1960s and 70s, and it even had a revival in the late 80s. But in the 90s, producer and star Tom Cruise tried to do the impossible: create a hit movie franchise based on an old TV show. Many shows have tried to become films, but few have succeeded. Yet with noted director Brian De Palma behind the camera, a bevy of stunt work, and Cruise on the poster, this film had a better chance than most. Should you choose to accept this first impossible mission? Join Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart to find out!

Hasbro’s Star Wars Fans’ Choice Poll is Back — And Bigger Than Ever!

HasbroQ&A

Once more, fans get to pick an upcoming character in the Star Wars line of figures.

Hasbro announced today that they are starting a new poll where Star Wars fans and collectors pick which figure is made.  This time, however, the poll is not for the long-running 3.75-inch line of figures, but for Hasbro’s newer 6-inch Black Series figure line.

To make it even more exciting, all Star Wars characters are eligible (except those from the unreleased The Force Awakens movie).   With that statement Hasbro has given fans perhaps their only chance to get a 6-inch action figure based on the Star Wars comics and novels that were removed from canon and put into the “Legends” category.  Of course, all characters from the films, major or minor, would also be given consideration.

Hasbro has confirmed to Star Wars Action News any character is eligible, including the long-desired Tonnika Sisters from A New Hope, Vlix from the 80s Droids series, and even Lumpy and Ackmena (Bea Arthur) from The Star Wars Holiday Special!

Also of note:  if the chosen character is from the Star Wars animated series Rebels or The Clone Wars the figure would be done in a realistic style consistent with the Black Series line’s look.

This year’s Fan’s Choice poll is being run by various Star Wars collecting sites, including Venganza Media’s own Star Wars Action News.  Before June 30th each participating site will submit to Hasbro their Top 5 list, with the #1 character getting 6 points, the #2 character 5 points, #3 character 4 points, and so on.

From the compiled lists from all the sites the character with the highest number of points will be immortalized in plastic–and Hasbro will reveal which character was chosen during their San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 10th.

Star Wars Action News is handling this with two rounds of voting.  First, they have opened a Figure Nomination thread in their forums.  In that post fans can free-form enter any characters they want.  That phase will be open until June 25th.  Then on the 25th a second poll will be opened where each fan can vote on the one figure they want most.  That poll will close on June 29th and the top five figures submitted to Hasbro on the 30th.

Begin your voting now!  Head to the Star Wars Action News forums and nominate your favorite character for the Black Series 6-inch line!

Firestarter: Rekindled

Firestarter: Rekindled has Malcolm McDowell and Dennis Hopper starring in a movie based on the works of Stephen King! If this movie came out in 1982 it may have had the star power, and budget, to be a true classic. But Rekindled didn’t come out when those actors’ star power was at its peak, it was made in 2002 as an original Sci-Fi Channel two part miniseries. In 1984 Stephen King had been given the moniker “The King of Horror.” Movies on his books had more hits than misses, and his every novel was a bestseller, including the tale of a pyrokinetic girl hunted by government agents — Firestarter! The heat from that book drew star Drew Barrymore, fresh off her role in the highest-grossing film of all time, E.T., With these two names combined, did the movie spark? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Jurassic Park – A Podcast Preview

In 1993 blockbuster director Steven Spielberg teamed with bestselling author Michael Crighton for Jurassic Park–the tale of genetically engineered dinosaurs run amok. The result was a crowd-pleasing success that resulted in a box office second only to E.T. for the director. As they prepare to continue the franchise anew with Jurassic World Stuart, Arnie, and Jakob dare to go into the park to review this series. The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)

Warning: This podcast deals with a movie that has no plot, hammy acting, and a hack script we wouldn’t want to wipe our asses with. It’s not even funny bad, it’s just a boring, miserable watching experience. We want no one to give this film a penny by paying for the rental. We appreciate you listeners enough to tell you this up front – you really don’t need to watch this film. And if you want to hear why – join Arnie, Stuart, and Marjorie for this podcast review.

Mad Max: Fury Road

It’s been 30 years since the last Mad Max film, but creator George Miller was compelled to go again into the post-apocalyptic Outback. The film suffered production troubles, extensive reshoots, and eventually had to film with a new star: Tomy Hardy as Max. But now the movie is on screens and bringing both praise and controversy. Did the series run out of gas without Mad Mel? Join Stuart, Arnie, and Jakob to find out!

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

Star Mel Gibson and director George Miller returned to the world of Mad Max one final time in 1985. With a budget larger than the previous two films combined, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome established its place in pop culture with both catch phrases and a catchy Tina Turner song. For nearly 30 years this was thought to be the closing chapter in the series, and is Gibson’s final time playing the titular character. How does this film hold up today? Listen to find out!

Pre-Order Alert: Hot Toys War Machine from Avengers: Age of Ultron

Hot Toys - Avengers Age of Ultron - War Machine Mark II Collectible Figure_PR9

For Iron Man 3 a number of collectibles were made showing Iron Man’s pal War Machine in his more metallic suit, but in editing only the Iron Patriot was shown.  Even Hot Toys released that version of the War Machine armor.

Do you think Don Cheadle looked at the gray War Machine armor made for Iron Man 3 and said, “Next time, baby!”?  Well, that time is now!

Now, for Avengers: Age of Ultron the War Machine is back and he’s in his classic colors!  But…there are some subtle differences between the suit designed for Iron Man 3 and the one shown on screen in Age of Ultron.  So while you may have a Hot Toys figure really close to this one–unless you pre-order this new figure from Hot Toys you don’t have the Age of Ultron armor!

And to add to the mix, this figure is only being offered through a partnership between Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles as a Sideshow exclusive figure!  (It’s about time we got one stateside after having to hunt for so many overseas variants).  If it’s anything like the last exclusive armored Avenger offered by Sideshow, the Stealth Armor Iron Man, it is bound to sell out fast too!

Plus this is part of Hot Toys’  MMS Diecast Series which the collectible figures are made of diecast material, and realistically designed to look even more like the armor as it appears in the film.  You heard our glowing review of Iron Patriot on Marvelicious Toys, now it’s time for War Machine to get that same love.

The movie-accurate War Machine Mark II Collectible Figure is crafted with great details and based on the image of Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine Mark II in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It features a highly detailed head sculpt, metallic black and dark silver colored armor with decals, LED light-up functions, rotatable machine gun, and a specially designed Avengers: Age of Ultron figure stand.

Gear yourself up for this super exciting film and expand your Avengers: Age of Ultron collection with this diecast collectible figure as “War Machine rocks”.

Hot Toys – MMS290D10 – Avengers: Age of Ultron 1/6th scale War Machine Mark II Collectible Figure Features:

– Body with Die Cast metal parts

– Authentic and detailed likeness as War Machine Mark II in Avengers: Age of Ultron

– Helmeted head sculpt with authentic likeness of Don Cheadle as James Rhodes

– Interchangeable helmeted head with LED light-up function (white light, battery operated)

Steven Spielberg’s Duel

Universal thought the Fast and Furious franchise was unstoppable. With each new sequel grossing more than the previous instalment, they fast tracked Furious 7, even if it meant losing long time series director Justin Lin and new star The Rock. But when Paul Walker died before the movie was complete the cast and the creatives making the film had to rework the script to be a fitting goodbye. Save Film Threat Magazine!

SaveFilmThreatFilm Threat Magazine is undergoing a millennial makeover!

Back in the early 1990s, there was no better way to get the lowdown on the thriving world of independent cinema than Chris Gore’s funny, fearless zine.  Film Threat was instrumental in educating movie fans on future cult classics and breakout art movies that never played my small town multiplex.  While so-called entertainment rags People and Premiere focused exclusively on heartthrobs and overexposed Hollywood blockbusters, Gore’s subscribers were among the first to read about emerging festival talent like Quentin Tarantino, Richard Linklater, and Robert Rodriguez.

I lost track of Film Threat after graduating film school, and the publication migrated away from paper-and-ink circulation to a popular website.  Thanks to Now Playing’s own Kickstarter campaign, I’ve learned about an exciting new opportunity to see my beloved news source return.

Film Threat is over a week into a 30 day Kickstarter campaign designed to re-launch their brand.  Founder Chris Gore promises revenue will be used to build a new website that will house podcasts, a web series, and over 80,000 articles.  A phone app is also in the works.

Gore and his writers are great at crafting snarky and passionate film analysis – a formula I’ve sought to emulate whenever I record Now Playing episodes.  And I still dig up back issues of the mag whenever I research an obscure installment of a franchise – their in-depth cover story on Roger Corman’s FANTASTIC FOUR was essential in being able to put that disaster into a proper context.

I will be happy to help out my old friend Film Threat when payday comes around this week, and wish Gore and company much success in their plans to tackle the ever-expanding world of independent cinema.   All the details about the campaign can be found at this link.   https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thatchrisgore/save-film-threat-and-bring-back-dvduesday

Fast & Furious 6

With Fast Five director Justin Lin opened the car racing franchise up to a wider audience. With in his final film in the series, Fast & Furious 6, Lin tried to continue that trend, setting Vin Diesel’s group of likeable outlaws against a European terrorist. Star Wars Episode VII: The Toys Awaken

maxresdefault

Star Wars Action News forum member Niklab wrote in with an interesting find–the Target DCPI information for loads of Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys!

He has broken down the toys into categories based on descriptions, and you can find the item stock number, Target price, and more below!

Some observations:

1)  The good news is Star Wars figures will continue to be in 3.75-inch scale!  After Hasbro experimented with 2.5-inch figures for Guardians of the Galaxy and the current Avengers: Age of Ultron toy lines, Star Wars fans feared Hasbro may follow suit with the Episode VII line.  But there are no signs of 2.5-inch toys and, in fact, there are even vehicle assortments in the 3.75-inch scale!

2)  The 6-inch toy line will continue, which seemed a given with Hasbro’s push for that new scale of collector-oriented figure.  Still, it is nice to have confirmation.

3)  Though we will have 3.75-inch figures, odds are collectors spoiled by the super-articulated figures released between 2005 and 2013 will be disappointed.  The Black Series 3.75-inch line has a MSRP of $9.99 and many Target stores sell them at $12.99 or above.  To see these new 3.75-inch figures priced at $7.99 indicates they will likely have greatly reduced articulation (though perhaps more than 4 points, as these are more expensive than the current “Mission Series” figures).

From role-play toys to Micro Machines and Die Cast vehicles, there will be something for everyone to collect–and likely too much for any one person to afford!

Read on for all the details!

Fast Five

Director Justin Lin had one thought going into his third Fast and Furious movie–what if they didn’t make it a Fast and Furious film. Rather than focusing on fast cars and racing, Fast Five becomes an action film involving drug dealers and spectacular chases. Culling a cadre of characters from the first four films, and adding The Rock as a new nemesis for Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto, Fast Five set a new course for the franchise. How does this film rank for action? Listen and find out!

Star Wars Gaming Updates from GAMA 2015

The GAMA Trade Show is currently being held in Las Vegas and Fantasy Flight Games, the company that currently holds to rights to produce miniature, card, and roleplaying games within the milieu of the Star Wars franchise, provided some updates during their presentation at the event on March 27th.

They started off their presentation by making sure that everyone was aware that the dock workers’ strike on the west coast has greatly affected their ability to ship merchandise to retailers. Many companies have been hit hard by the port delays and it seems that Fantasy Flight Games was unable to escape them either. This would account for several of their products being delayed past their original expected shipping dates, including the Armada core game, along with its first wave of expansion packs and the next cycle of Force Packs for the Star Wars Living Card Game.

However, these delays appear to be abating as the company did update Force and Destiny: Beginner Gamethe shipping date for Force and Destiny: Beginner Game to April 2015. These RPG beginner boxes are a great way for players who are new to Fantasy Flight Games’ roleplaying mechanics to learn the ropes of playing a character in a pre-built story mission, or playing the game master who leads up to 4 other players in telling the story.

They also announced that the first wave of expansion packs for Imperial Assault will be available this week! For those of you who heard my report for Star Wars Action News about last year’s GenCon, you’ll know that this is probably the best Star Wars game I have ever played. And since Fantasy Flight Games announced yesterday that it was their largest release ever, I don’t think I’m alone in that. Personally, I cannot wait to add these Villain and Ally Packs to my collection further hone my skills in the game’s one-on-one skirmish mode.

Next, Fantasy Flight Games announced the second wave of Imperial Assault expansion packs that are set to ship this summer:

  • Twin Shadows – $39.95
  • C-3PO and R2-D2 – $14.95
  • Kayn Somos – $9.95
  • Boba Fett – $9.95

Twin Shaswi10-boxleftdows is a great-looking boxed set, which includes 4 missions that can either be inserted into the core set’s larger campaign or played separately as a mini-campaign. It also includes 2 new hero figures, 2 new villain types (Heavy Stormtroopers and Tusken Raiders) along with a dozen new map tiles to play out the new missions on! And of course there are a slew of cards and tokens to round out the box.

As with the core game, Twin Shadows will introduce characters into the campaign that don’t get fleshed out figures within the box. Instead, you will need to rely on their 2D character tokens when they enter play. However, three new Hero and Villain packs will also be coming so you can have 3D versions of your favorite droids when fighting against the most fearsome Mandalorian in the galaxy. Boba Fett has his own allies too. Kay Somos is a Stormtrooper Commander (shoulder pauldron included) who can help add actions to the other troopers on your map.

The Armada core game is expected to be available at the end of this month with it’s own first wave of ships arriving shortly after. Fantasy Flight Games is really proud of this game and were apparently not content with just the core game and first wave of Rebel and Imperial ship expansions. Soon, we will be treated to Wave 2! Not much is known about these packs yet, but look for more information on these sets soon:

  • Rogues and Villains – a large group of medium-sized ships that include the Falcon and Slave I
  • Mon Calamari Cruiser
  • Mon Calamari Frigate
  • Imperial Raider – this is a ship designed by FFG and was first announced for their X-Wing game

IMG_5784

All-in-all, some really exciting stuff here. And yes, they did officially confirm that they will be doing Episode 7 products, but obviously did not go into any detail. Hopefully we will get some glimpses of some new products next month at Star Wars Celebration, though I’m sure that information about The Force Awakens merchandise will be scarce until later this year. Nevertheless, this is a great time to be a Star Wars gamer.

Movie Review: Better Luck Tomorrow — Is This the Prequel to The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift?

Kickstarter FB Header Image

Better_luck_tomorrow_poster001Four Asian high school honor students take on illegal extra-curricular activities in Justin Lin’s BETTER LUCK TOMORROW. What starts with cheat sheets quickly escalates to major criminal activities, while our main character Ben starts using cocaine to keep up his grades and gang status.

The high school drama feels honest, with Ben taken with lab partner Stephanie, unsure of his place in the high school hierarchy, and very focused on college and his future. In fact, for the first act of this film I thought that’s all the movie would be–an Asian-American coming of age drama like The Breakfast Club or Almost Famous. When the film takes its second act turn and becomes a crime film it was unexpected, but never felt disingenuous.

I kept trying to anticipate how the film would progress, and I never got it right. Lin’s picture (which he co-wrote) keeps taking unexpected turns, and I was along for the ride.

The cast is uniformly awesome. Shen, likely best known now for his three turns in the Hatchet series, carries the film. Told from his point of view, he’s in every scene. His daily routines reminded me of an Aaronofsky character, but showed his focus on his goals. When the character makes unexpected choices, it’s Shen who makes sense of it.

Jason Tobin plays Virgil. Seemingly the least intelligent and most impulsive member of the gang, Tobin brings a madness and pathos to the role that really added suspense. It really seems Virgil will be the group’s undoing.

Roger Fan’s Derec, the leader of the gang, is charismatic and scheming, but also seems like a good guy. The wrong balance with Derec could turn you against the gang, but Fan plays the balance and even at times seems vulnerable.

And Sung Kang plays Han–the reason I watched this film. Kang would go on to play Han in 3 of Lin’s FAST AND FURIOUS films, and Lin has said it’s the same Han seen in this film. Here Han is not given the focus much, but he is the coolest member of the gang with a pretty nice car. He’d fade into the background were it not for his future collaborations with Lin.

And in a supporting role is the film’s biggest star, John Cho. Primarily known as the “MILF Guy” from American Pie, of course Cho would go on to do the Harold and Kumar films before playing Sulu on Star Trek. Here, as a spoiled rich kid two-timing Stephanie, the object of Ben’s affections, Cho strikes the right notes with a tricky and pretentious character.

The film avoids any stereotypes–these are just high schoolers who happen to be Asian, but they’re all-American kids balancing a bright future with a life of crime and instant gratification.

When the film ended I found myself satisfied. It was a drama film that had elements of crime, not a crime film with elements of drama, but an entertaining and moving watch. RECOMMEND.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

The third Fast and Furious film took a sharp turn, leaving the series’ previous actors in the dust to tell a new story about a rebellious teen racing on the streets of Tokyo. The series has a new star, a new style of racing, and a new director in Justin Lin–who would return for three more Fast and Furious installments. Does the third movie in this series have the Now Playing hosts turning Japanese? Listen now to find out!

Movie Review: About Last Night

Kickstarter FB Header Image

alnThe 1986 Brat Pack romance About Last Night is one of my favorite films.  That movie was adapted from the 1970s David Mamet play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” and starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore as Danny and Debbie — two young adults trying to make a relationship out of a one night stand.  Strong comedic turns from James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins as Bernie and Joan, the lovers’ best friends, added a great deal of enjoyable humor to the film.

I have watched that 80s film so often that when I saw a trailer recycling its one-liners I was appalled…until I realized that film was a remake.  Knowing the original film was dated I was actually happy with the idea of a remake, bringing that movie’s charm to a new generation of young adults.  Last year around Valentine’s Day couples again had a chance to talk About Last Night.

I was surprised, however, at how closely this 2014 version hews to the original.  The plot is beat-for-beat the same, with many scenes being re-enacted with near-identical dialogue.  Some of the slang terms were updated to make the lines feel more modern, but this is the same movie as was done almost 20 years ago.

The biggest difference here is the cast.  Perhaps attempting to appeal to a new demographic all four main characters are now African-American.  Surprisingly, all that really changed was the characters’ skin color–the names, actions, and attitudes all mirror those of the white actors in the 80s version.  They even work in the same jobs as their earlier counterparts.  That this cast happens to be African-American is entirely incidental in this film as directed by Steve Pink (Accepted, Hot Tub Time Machine parts 1 and 2).

The characters aren’t living in Chicago any more, but this movie is a clone of the original.

That said, much like Gus Van Sant’s remake of Psycho, you can take the same script and not achieve the same results.  As Danny and Debbie, the main couple, Michael Ealy (Think Like a Man and “Slap Jack” in 2 Fast 2 Furious) and Joy Bryant (TV’s Parenthood) simply lack chemistry.  I truly believed every scene between Lowe and Moore in the original, with their complex emotions and conflicting desires.  Yet in this remake Ealy and Bryant seem to be going through the motions.  Each deliver their lines with feeling, but yet I don’t feel the raw heat that worked so well in the first film.

To make up for this the previously supporting characters of Bernie and Joan have been beefed up.  Kevin Hart (Ride Along, The Wedding Ringer) is even given top billing in the credits, though his role of Bernie is only slightly larger than Belushi’s original.  Still, Hart is a capable comedian and his Bernie is even better than Belushi’s original.  Hart may recycle many of the original film’s jokes but his delivery and timing simply make them funnier.

To continue expanding Bernie’s character a new subplot was added focusing on Bernie’s relationship with Joan (Scary Movie‘s Regina Hall).  Belushi and Perkins had sexual tension in the original, but here it’s a full-on relationship that is more fun to watch than the movie’s A-plot.

As I just don’t care about this movie’s Danny and Debbie the remake will never supplant the original for me, but thanks to Hart and Hall I give this film a recommend

2 Fast 2 Furious

When The Fast and The Furious raced up the box office Universal Pictures thought they had a franchise on their hands and hit the NOS for a sequel–with or without Vin Diesel. So for 2 Fast 2 Furious Paul Walker returns as Brian O’Connor, once again going undercover to bring down a criminal mastermind. This time, though, Brian’s trash-talking bald-headed partner isn’t Dominic Turetto, but Roman Pierce played by R&B singer Tyrese Gibson. Helmed by Oscar nominated director John Singleton, is this sequel Carz in the Hood, or did this cash-grab get the Shaft? Race to NowPlayingPodcast.com to hear this review and find out!

Liam Neeson Brings Non-Stop Stupidity

Kickstarter FB Header Image

Please, Liam...make it stop!

Please, Liam…make it stop!

Is Liam Neeson consciously trying to emulate Nicolas Cage’s career path?  Both actors won Academy Awards for dramatic roles, and then signed up for a series of increasingly inane action films until all the credibility they once had is gone.

Neeson continues his descent with Non-Stop in which he plays alcoholic Air Marshall Bill (not to be confused with Jim Carrey’s Fire Marshall Bill).  Bill’s personal problems impact his professional career when he receives an anonymous text threatening one person on the flight will die every 20 minutes if $150 million isn’t deposited into an account.  Worse, this mysterious mastermind is framing Bill for the plot, setting up a fake account in the Air Marshall’s name.

The film kept me on the edge of my seat, not because I cared about Bill or any of the other passengers, but because I really wanted an explanation of how these faceless felons pulled off such a trick.  Yet the film never bothers trying to explain the “how”, possibly realizing the entire story is so outlandish that it’s pointless to try and explain it away.  In short–if you care about plot you shouldn’t be watching this film, and the filmmakers know it.  Truly, this film is Non-Stop stupidity.

Worst of all Julianne Moore is completely wasted in a role far beneath an actress of her stature and ability.  I’d like to call her a red hair-ring but she doesn’t even rise to that level.

Truthfully I watched most of this film completely ambivalent.  Midway through I tried to decide if that makes it a “recommend” or not.  Then the film’s absurd climax happened.  No answers may have been given as to how the criminals pulled their job, but the answer of how I rank this film was crystal clear.

Neeson’s career is not quite there, but if it continues its current path it will drop below 8,000 feet–which as the film tells me is such a dangerous altitude that fighter planes may scramble to shoot it down and prevent danger to civilians on the ground.

Review: Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

Kickstarter FB Header Image

superman_batman_public_enemies_dvd_raw

Lex Luthor is the beloved President of the United States.  Most of the world’s superheroes, including Power Girl and Captain Atom, are agents for his government.  Refusing to join up, Superman and Batman are wanted criminals in the Warner Bros. animated movie Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.Based on the graphic novel by Joseph Loeb and Ed McGuinness, this alternate-universe story creates a low barrier of entry for any fan.  I didn’t have to watch all the previous DC Universe animated films or the Batman and Superman animated series to follow what was going on.  An engaging opening montage sets the stage for this alternate universe, and the focus is on the most well-known characters Luthor and Superman.
But as the story progresses, Superman and Batman teaming up against heroes and villains alike.  There are characters in this movie I’ve not thought of since I watched Challenge of the Super Friends in the 70s, including Solomon Grundy, Captain Cold and Black Manta.  For fans of the DC universe this deep roster of characters including Starfire, Bane, Metallo, Giganta, and dozens moren.  Plus there were many more characters I didn’t know but the comic fans would likely will be a treat to see in full-motion animation.  Power Girl, voiced by Allison Mack, gets a critical role as well in her first film appearance (boob window in full effect). The story reminds me of the video game Injustice: Gods Among Us where heroes fight heroes and villains in mortal combat.  It may be base, but it’s really fun to watch Superman punch out Shazam and Batman taking on Captain Atom.  The story is not what keeps me engaged–it’s the action.  In the end, it’s simply a fun film.
The animation is detailed, not feature film quality but better than most TV shows.  More than serviceable, it has moments of beauty.  With so many character designs it’s impressive that each get detailed representations. The ending is very silly (involving a robot that is literally half Superman and half Batman, split down the middle like Prince in the “Batdance” video), but getting there is fun.

I finished this movie thinking next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice  will be damn lucky if it is as good as Public Enemies.  Recommend.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

From the director of X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass comes Kingsman: The Secret Service. Like Kick-Ass, this film is also based on an original comic by Mark Millar, but now the pair are focusing on a young man trying to join an independent group of spies who pose as tailors. With a combination of new faces and established actors like Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson, does this new movie also kick ass? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Boyhood

The making of this film is unlike any other: director Richard Linklater and his stars convened annually over the span of twelve years to make a movie about a boy growing into a man. The sheer scope and complexity of the project is enormous, but it was completed when Boyhood hit theaters in 2014. But with all the behind-the-scenes complexity, was the final film worth it? Join Stuart, Jakob, and Arnie in this review to find out!

New Funko POP! Vinyl Exclusives Coming to Walgreens

IMG_4200

This month saw the first Walgreens Marvel Comics exclusive figures in the Funko POP! Vinyl figure line.  Now it looks Walgreens will be getting POP! Vinylu exclusives from another Disney licensee–Star Wars!

A Bothan spy contacted us this morning with information from the Walgreens stock system showing four upcoming items all listed as “POP! STAR WARS EXCLUSIVE”

This revelation is no surprise.  At the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con International Walgreens announced 6-Inch figure exclusives–the first was Agent Venom in Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line.  This was quickly followed by the Prototype Boba Fett in Hasbro’s Star Wars 6-inch Black Series figure line.  That Funko would follow a similar pattern–release four Marvel POP! exclusives first, then four Star Wars POP! exclusives, makes sense.

The Walgreens exclusive Marvel POP! Vinyls are just now starting to appear in Walgreens stores.  With both Black Outfit Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 packed 1 per case eBay prices have soared as high as $60.  Star Wars collectors should brace themselves for similar short-packed figures.

More information on this will likely be revealed at Toy Fair International, taking place this coming weekend in New York City.  Star Wars Action News and Marvelicious Toys will both be covering the events, so be sure to follow them through social media for the latest updates on all Star Wars and Marvel toys!

New Podcast – Marvelicious Toys Issue 135: I Want to Hold Hulk Hand

coverFor Captain America the shield is more than defense–it’s a symbol of America and taking “the American Dream and make it an American reality.” Now, nearly 75 years after first appearing in Captain America Comics #2, Captain America and his shield serve as a symbol, both in the Marvel Universe and in the real world, of strength, idealism, and patriotism. And as seen in The Avengers and the two Captain America movies, it’s pretty darn cool as well!

In 2014 eFX Collectibles’ gave fans their chance to be like Stephen Colbert and put Captain America’s shield on their walls with their Avengers Captain America Shield Prop Replica. A full scale collectible cast from the original molds of the prop used in The Avengers, this eFX prop had been teased for years. Even with an edition size of 1,500 it sold out quickly. But the Marvelicious Toys hosts have one in-hand and review it on this episode!

Also on this show, a quick review of the new Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors figures from Hasbro, a look at the new Thanos and Captain America figures from Hot Toys, and a preview of the new LEGO UCS LEGO set.

So what are you waiting for? Marvelicious Collectors Assemble for this week’s new show!
