Hasbro Not Responsible for Star Wars and Super Hero Action Figure Price Jump
Action figure collectors across the country recently took to Facebook and Twitter to vent their frustration over the rising cost of action figures.
At Target, one of the three largest toy sellers in the US, action figure prices recently took a $3 jump. Hasbro’s Star Wars 3.75-inch Black Series figures as well as Hasbro’s 3.75-inch Marvel Infinite Series figures went from $9.99 to $12.99 at most Target locations, with some other stores going even as high as $15.29.
Collectors were worried that this price would soon be mirrored by other top toy sellers including Walmart and Toys ‘R’ Us.
We reached out to Hunter PR, the public relations firm which represents Hasbro, to ask about this price increase. When I asked if the Suggested Retail Price of the action figures was going up, the response was very clear: “The price change was instituded by the retailer and not at the manufacturer level.”
This was widely speculated to be the case as other action figures, including Mattel’s DC Multiverse line, had gone up in price as well. That being said, it is nice to have confirmation that the price of action figures, which has gone up 100% in the past 10 years, is not taking yet another manufacturer-instituted jump.
Now we can only wait and see if Target will reduce the price back to its previous level to stay competitive in the action figure market, or if the other toy retailers will raise prices to match Target’s newly increased profit margin.

EXCLUSIVE NEWS: Avengers Figures Will be 2.5-inches, ship in January
Hasbro will be selling a 2.5-inch Avengers: Age of Ultron action figure line as soon as this February.
One of our HYDRA spies sent us the above screenshot from their inventory system. This shows that Hasbro will be shipping 2.5-inch Avengers: Age of Ultron figure 2-packs, continuing the smaller scale figure line they debuted with their Guardians of the Galaxy figure line. These figures are scheduled to arrive at their warehouse on January 28th.
While this news may not excite action figure collectors, it actually may be a harbinger of worse news. With Guardians of the Galaxy Hasbro eschewed the 3.75-inch scale of action figures they had made since their earliest action figure lines based on X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Iron Man 2. Due to the rising cost of action figures Hasbro went with less expensive 2.5-inch figure 2-packs. These figures had much less paint detail and articulation than Hasbro had put in their 3.75-inch lines, and many collectors wrote them off as kid’s toys. The smaller figure style allowed for Hasbro to focus on vehicles as part of the line’s play pattern, releasing space ships seen in the movie to scale with these figures.
The news of Avengers: Age of Ultron figures may indicate Hasbro is giving their toy line for the upcoming film the same treatment they gave Guardians of the Galaxy.
At a press event held in New York last October Hasbro revealed Avengers: Age of Ultron figures in their collector-focused, 6-inch Marvel Legends line. They also showed new figures in their Marvel Infinite Series 3.75-inch line, but these figures were comic-based rather than movie-based. They also showed a Quinjet vehicle from the upcoming film that, while the same approximate size as the 3.75-inch scale Quinjet, Hasbro has confirmed is for 2.5-inch figures.
When asked for more details on the likelihood of a 3.75-inch Age of Ultron figure line, a Hasbro representative confirmed the Quinjet shown was 2.5-inch scale, and added: “I can’t comment on the existence or any details of a 3.75-inch action figure line at this time. There will be more information on the Age of Ultron toy line as we get closer to Toy Fair.”
Will you be disappointed with no 3.75-inch figure line for Age of Ultron or are Legends and 2.5-inch enough? Let us know in the comments below!

Star Wars #1: Hasbro Previews Exclusive Variant
Star Wars Exclusive Action Figure at…WALGREENS?
If you follow Marvel Toy collecting then you know the community has been buzzing this week with Hasbro’s confirmation that the formerly-cancelled Agent Venom Marvel Legends figure will be released this August as an exclusive. More shocking was where the exclusive would be sold–Walgreens, the ubiquitous corner drug-store chain. This is the first time Walgreens has carried an exclusive Hasbro toy, but per our sources another may be coming very soon.
We received an e-mail with the included screenshot from a Walgreens system showing that there also is a Star Wars exclusive action figure coming to Walgreens. The listing reads “STAR WARS BOBA FETT EXCLUSIVE DISP” and is listed as “ACTION FIGURES/ACCESSRY”. The retail price shown is $19.99, which seems inexpensive for a Black Series 6-inch figure (given Walgreens inflated prices) but overpriced for a 3.75-inch figure.
Our source speculates it may be a repainted Boba Fett 6-inch, perhaps in the white McQuarrie colored armor, or perhaps with the Return of the Jedi markings. (Hasbro’s Darryl DePriest has said the intent was to have last year’s San Diego Comic-Con exclusive be the Boba Fett and the regular retail version have Return of the Jedi coloring).
The expected arrival date is listed as August 27, 2014–around the same time the Venom should be hitting the corner of happy & healthy.
We have reached out to our friends at Hasbro asking for confirmation. More news as we get it!
And, as always, all news is considered rumor until confirmed by Hasbro.

Sideshow has the (Iron Man) MIDAS Touch – preorder now!
Hot Toys exclusives can be maddening for collectors. Often available only internationally, collectors must rely on eBay to get the exclusive figures or pieces. One such item was the Iron Man MIDAS Armor, with it’s metallic golden sheen. An international convention exclusive, the MIDAS armor sold on eBay for nearly $1,000 before settling down to a price of about $600. As no indication of US availability was given, fans started to lose hope.
But now on Cyber Monday Sideshow Collectibles has FINALLY released the Hot Toys Iron Man MIDAS armor, and it’s up for order now!
This armor WILL sell out fast. It has so many factors leading me to believe this: 1) It’s Iron Man. While Spider-Man and Captain America may sit in Stock at Sideshow for a while, Iron Man always pre-sells out and goes for higher secondary prices. 2) It’s an exclusive piece. The Iron Man Battle Damaged MK VII is what I would equate this to and it sold out in a day–I expect MIDAS may even go faster due to the pent up demand.
- Authentic likeness of Midas (Mark XXI), the high-altitude suit, in the Iron Man 3
- Approximately 30 cm tall
- Over 36 points of articulations
- Special features on armor:
- Multitude of layers and shades of metallic gold-colored painting on armor
- LED-lighted eyes andcircle-shaped RT on chest (white light, battery operated)
- One (1) removable chest armor
- One (1) pair of interchangeable forearm rockets
- Three (3) pairs of interchangeable palms including:
- One (1) pair with improved articulations, movable fingers and light-up repulsors (white light, battery operated)
- One (1) pair of forceful fists
- One (1) pair of repulsor palms
- Two (2) sets of interchangeable shoulder armors (normal & missile styles)
- Improved articulations on waist armor which allow flexible movement
- Fully deployed air flaps at back of the armor with built-in metal flaps
- Articulated flaps at the back of armor on left and right legs
So if you THINK you want this, head to Sideshow’s site now! And remember to support Marvelicious Toys by using our link in this post, or the link to Sideshow from the MarveliciousToys.com home page whenever shopping at Sideshow. It also helps us get prizes for us to give to you like the Hot Toys Captain America donated by Sideshow for the Marvelicious Toys 100th epsiode. And thank you for your support!
